Greenwood Meadows

Greenwood Meadows FC was a non-league football club from Nottingham that was formed in 1987 following the merger of Greenwood FC, formed in 1956 and Meadows Albion FC, with both clubs’ members of the Notts Alliance.

The new club took Greenwood's place in Division One of the competition, finishing as runners-up in 1989-90. The club moved into an enclosed ground at Lenton Lane, adjacent to the home of Dunkirk FC close to the bank of the River Trent.

After a fifth-place Senior Division finish in 1996-97, ‘The Magpies’ progressed to the Premier Division of the Central Midlands League. A runners-up place in 2000-01 saw Meadows win promotion to the Supreme Division.

The club became founder members of the East Midlands County League in 2008-09, finishing sixth in 2009-10 then tenth the following campaign before slipping down the table before finishing bottom in 2014-15.

The same last place followed in 2015-16, before an improvement of just one position in 2016-17. Greenwood Meadows failed to complete all their fixtures and were relegated to the South Division of the Central Midlands League at the end of the season.

However, the club resigned from the competition and called it a day. Meadows Lenton Lane ground was later taken over by Nottingham Outlaws Rugby League club.

My visit

Wednesday 16th September 2009

Pete Moss the Nottingham based Scarborough Athletic ground had given me a ride to Lenton Lane after he finished work for the day. We had just been to Dunkirk FC which is only about 100m away on a large greenfield site. The gates into the ground were locked, but I was not to be beaten!

Pete pulled into the entrance while I backtracked up the lane. I had seen a gap in the hedge into the adjoining par three golf course. I trod carefully through all kind of wildlife before emerging next to the ground. A fence was missing onto the golf course, so I was soon inside to take a look.

Lenton Lane was a pretty basic venue. The entrance is behind a goal and the changing rooms and clubhouse stand in the corner of the car park. A junior pitch is behind the goal. The ground is surrounded by flat grass and paths and is completely open apart from on the Golf Course Side.

It had two covers either way of the half way line. One has some blue tip up seats, while the other has covered standing accommodation.
The ground ticked the boxes required for the league that Meadows play in, but it would need some work if they were to progress.
